Planning is such an integral part of projects. Don’t leave it behind even for a day.
Planning does not mean you need a 1000 line project plan or a wall to wall roadmap. Planning means that you are thinking ahead all the time, trying to anticipate what you will need 2 or 3 weeks from today, four weeks from today, six months from today. Our planning horizons are reducing at a rapid pace these days.
Just like you brush your teeth every day, you check your email everyday, why not plan every day? But you know what’s more important than planning. It’s sticking to a plan. Ever tried to go on a healthy diet or an exercise regime? You can plan as much as you wish, but if you don’t follow your plan – miss those workouts, eat doughnuts when you should be eating almonds – your plan is crumbling in front of you. Every day counts! It’s like a jetliner setting course and the job of the pilot is to try not to deviate from that course too much so that ultimately he will reach his destination.
We fail often not in planning, but in sticking to the plan. Those small tweaks are what get us to where we want to go, and there’s always time for small tweaks. Try one less meeting to make your tweak today.
